With two months to go to the start of the World Youth Chess Championship 2023, MCF has formalized its Youth squad of six (6) players to the international event. The team bound for Montesilvano, Italy will be headed by MCF Vice President I – Muhammad Firdaus Ismail with Malaysia’s No. 1 Junior Player – FM Poh Yu Tian, and MCC 23 Women Champion – WNM Ainul Mardhiah Mohd Afif as part of the contingent.

Compare to the Cadets event, the Youth event is tailored for players in the older age bracket – Under 14, Under 16 and Under 18. Players representing Malaysia for the Youth event were mainly selected from the winner’s pool of the NYCC 2023 event, or those who have applied and approved by the selection committee. For the Youth event, there were no applications received for additional players.

The six (6) players from Malaysia that are bound for Italy are:

Malaysians will definitely focus its attention to FM Poh Yu Tian who is eyeing his final norm for an IM as he has already achieved the 2400 FIDE Rating points to seal the deal. It will also mark WNM Ainul Mardhiah’s first international outing as our Women National Champion which will definitely put her to the test of competing with other players from other countries.
