The 8th edition of the Eastern Asian Youth Chess Championship commenced yesterday at the Cititel Hotel in Georgetown, Penang. The championship will be played in the classical format over 9 rounds from July 13 to July 20, 2024. The Eastern Asian Youth Chess Championship includes six age categories split between the open and the girls’ section. The event brought together 363 participants from 16 countries competing for the prestigious titles. Currently Malaysia’s number two and also the highest rated player in the tournament, FM Poh Yu Tian who is competing in the U18O category is surely in the limelight as he is eyeing for the direct title award – International Master.

The tournament began with a grand opening ceremony. Deputy Minister of Finance and also the parliament member of Tanjong, YB Lim Hui Ying was the chief guest at the opening ceremony and made the ceremonial move against FM Poh Yu Tian to inaugurate the event.

Chief Arbiter for the event is IA KK Chan of Hong Kong, assisted by local arbiters such as IA Collin Madhavan, IA Chuah Jonathan, IA Lim Poay Sim, IA Syawal Aqmar, FA Wong Qi Hao and others.
