The Malaysian Chess Federation had its Annual General Meeting at the Agrobank Training Center Auditorium earlier today and concluded its election of new office bearers for the 2023/2024 term.
Attended by delegations from 13 State affiliates from all over Malaysia and 19 members of the main MCF committee, the meeting which started at just after 10:00am concluded at about 12:30noon with incumbent Akhramsyah Muammar Ubaidah Sanusi returning at the helm against challenger Hamidah Abdul Hamid who is also the President of the Persatuan Catur Pahang.
Also returning as a committee member is Dr. Zaidan Zulkipli who won unopposed for the Deputy President’s post – vacated by YM Dato’ Tengku Ahmad Badli Shah who has decided to take a rest after more than 6 years serving in the committee under three different Presidents. YM Dato’ Tengku Ahmad Badli Shah has cited work commitment as one of the reasons that he is reluctant to continue. Nonetheless, he has voiced his hope to continue providing assistance and contribution to the Federation in his capacity as the CEO of Agrobank – as displayed by his willingness to support the National Scholastic Chess Championship which is currently being hosted at the bank’s training center in Bangi.
Other familiar faces returning as committee members are Muhammad Firdaus Ismail, Sumant Subramaniam, and Muammar Julkarnain as the newly designated Vice Presidents with Muammar as the rotating representative for Sabah/Sarawak – the post which was previously held by Abang Mohd Reduan Abang Sahari of Sarawak. Previously, both Vice Presidents Firdaus and Sumant served as Committee Members for the Federation.
The five vacant seats for the committee also went uncontested after the 6th candidate – Najib Abdul Wahab decided to withdraw his nomination allowing the remaining five candidates to secure their Committee Member’s posts unopposed. Four members – Syed Iskandar Shah Syed Hussin, Steven Cheng Kok Love, Mok Tze Meng, and Iwan Schani are returning office bearers from the previous committee with Abu Bakar Martin Abdullah, as the newly inducted member into the Federation.
The Malaysian Chess Federation wishes to express its thanks and gratitude to all the delegations and representatives of all the State Affiliates that have come from all across the country to attend the AGM. The opportunity for State Associations to meet physically with peers from other states – post covid era, allows for the community to rekindle and foster relationships, improve networking and create opportunities to learn and exchange ideas, to strengthen and to further develop chess in the country.
Thank you again for the support, trust, and confidence from the chess community and state associations – wishing and looking forward for the new committee to continue paving ways to improve, develop, and elevate chess to a higher standard.
