FIDE – ISF World School Online Cup
While the impact and distraught brought about by the COVID19 experience may have turned our lives inside out, the aftereffect of the pandemic has also shed light on how we can be more productive. For chess, online activities have now become a viable option for many organizers to expand their reach. And despite the cheating and connectivity issues that are disrupting the sport, many online events continue to be contested as a compliment, or in addition to the many Over-The-Board events that are gradually returning to the norm.
That said, FIDE is also keeping with the digital trend by keeping some of the more popular online events especially for kids and the younger players with the return of the FIDE – ISF World School Online Cup 2022.
The event will be held online on Tornelo platform and is open to students and teachers in the boys and girls U15 and U18 age categories. The qualification tournaments for students are scheduled on the 12th and 13th of March with the finals taking place on the 19th and 20th of March. On the other hand, the event schedule for the teachers’ event will be much shorter with the qualification tournament to be held on the 26th of March 2022 and finals on the following day on the 27th of March 2022. All finals will be live-streamed on the YouTube channels of both FIDE and ISF.
Time control of the event is 3 minutes plus 2 seconds increment per move. The qualification tournaments will be played in a Swiss System format of 11 rounds with the top 40 players in the final ranking advancing to the final rounds to be held over 9-round Swiss format.
The winners in each category will be awarded tickets with free two-night accommodation in the official hotel at the World Chess Olympiad to be held in Moscow in July/August 2022. All the medal-winners will also receive free lessons with top grandmasters.
