National Rapid and Blitz Chess Championship 2024 @ KL Gateway – 22nd to 24th November
MCF Secretariat 03/10/2024 0 COMMENTSThe annual National Rapid and Blitz Chess Championship will again be sponsored through the generosity of KL Gateway – the official tournament venue for the second year running. With RM6,000 in prize money up for grabs for the eventual winners – an increased fund from last year’s edition, the 3 days event will start with a 9 round Rapid tournament from Friday, 22nd November at 2:30pm until Sunday morning, 24th November at 11:00am. Time control for the Rapid event is 15 minutes + 10 seconds increment per player from move 1.
At 12:00noon on Sunday, the 9 round Blitz tournament with a time control of 3 minutes + 2 seconds increment will kick off and is expected to complete by 3:30pm. This year’s blitz event will feature a knock-out playoff format where the top 4 players will battle it out to be crowned as the outright Blitz Champion 2024. Each pair will play 2 games each (handling each the white and black pieces at least once) and if the game ended in a 1-1 draw, an Armageddon style tie breaker will be used to determine the winner. For the Armageddon battle, the player drawing the white pieces will have 5 minutes of play (against black 4 minutes) but in a MUST win situation.
The event is opened to Malaysians Only and the entry fees is set at RM80 for State nominated players (limit to 4 players per state), RM100 for FIDE Rated players, and RM120 for Unrated players. Players with IM/WIM title including former champions – NM/WNM, are invited to play for free. For State nominated players and titled players/former champions, please email directly to mcfsecretariat@malaysiachess.org to submit your registration. Entry fee is for both Rapid and Blitz events. To register for Blitz only, the fee is RM50 per person regardless of Rating.
Closing date is 15th November 2024 and late registration will incur a penalty fee of RM50 – subject to seat availability. No entries will be entertained after 19th November 2024.

With RM6,000 in cash prizes – increased from last year’s pool, the Rapid event is set to start on Friday, 22nd November at 2:30pm with 9 rounds of play, and ends on Sunday morning, 24th November at about 11:00pm. The time control for the Rapid event is 15 minutes + 10 seconds increment. Once the Rapid event is over, the Blitz event will start at 12:00noon for another 9 rounds using a time control of 3 minutes + 2 seconds increment.
For the Blitz event, the format is changed slightly where the top 4 players will go into a playoff round to determine the outright Blitz Champion for the 2024. Each pair will play two games against one another (handling the white and black pieces at least once) and if the game ends in a 1-1 draw, an Armageddon style tie break will be used to determine the champion. For the Armageddon decider, player with the white pieces will have 5 minutes to play but in a must win situation to advance or to win. The format is introduced to provide a bit of excitement as players and spectators support their favorite player to win in a fast paced chess game.
The closing date to register is 15th November 2024 and the fees are set at RM80 for State Rep (limit to 4 players), RM100 for Rated players and RM120 for Unrated players. The fees are for both the Rapid and Blitz event. For Blitz event only, the rate is RM50 per player. IM/WIM titled players and former Champions – NM/WNM, are invited to play for free.
