The Malaysian Chess Federation is proud to introduce a new event in its 2025 calendar of activities which is the upcoming National Open Team Rapid Chess Championship 2025 to be held on 30th of August 2025. To be hosted and supported by International Youth Centre in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur, the Team event will mirror the PMX event but adopting the Rapid time control of 15 mins + 10 second increment. To be played over 7 rounds, the team format for the event shall consist of four team players with no reserve allowed.
The team event offers a total prize fund of RM15,000 with the winning team to take home RM3,000 for their effort with 7 more prizes offered in the Open category. The Best State team stands to win RM1,200 with additional category winners to each receive RM400 as category leader.
Entry fee starts at RM400 for an open team and RM300 for adult teams such as Veterans, Companies and All Women’s team, and RM250 for Junior Teams. Entry fee for an OKU Team is set at RM200. Team who wants to field a foreigner in their team are allowed to do so but each foreigner will incur an additional RM50 with RM400 as the baseline for the team registration. A team with 1 foreigner will need to pay RM450 while a team with 2 foreigners will need to pay an entry fee of RM500. An all-foreigners team entry fee is RM600.
MCF is also creating another category for chess clubs and associations – provided they are registered with COS, and the team is comprised of committee members of the association. The registration for the team is RM200 but teams must submit a copy of COS’s registration and committee lineup to confirm their entry.
The closing date to register is 24th August and team registering after this date will be accepted subject to space availability including a penalty of RM100 per team registered. No entries will be accepted after 27th August 2025.
The concept to organize the event on the eve of Merdeka Day Celebration is to allow for Malaysians from all over the country to converge playing chess and to enjoy the Merdeka celebration the following day since Monday is also a day off for many states allowing them to travel home and rest before the week starts on Tuesday.
