Malaysian Delegation at 9th Eastern Asia Youth Chess Championship 2025 in Zhuhai, China

A delegation of 20 Malaysian players took part in the 9th Eastern Asia Youth Chess Championship 2025, held from 20th to 30th July at the Zhuhai Holiday Resort in Zhuhai, Guangdong, China. The team was led by Head of Delegation (HOD) Mok Tze Meng, who guided our players through a week of intense competition and international exposure.

Malaysia had the honour of hosting last year’s 8th edition of the same event in Penang (2024), and this year’s participation continued our strong presence on the Eastern Asia youth chess circuit.

Malaysia was also proudly represented by two arbiters — IA Genkeswaran Muniyan (left) and IA Kumaressan Thiagarajoo (right) — who officiated during the event.

While the main Classical event proceeded as scheduled, the Rapid segment — originally slated for Day 1 — was postponed to the final day due to weather disruptions brought by Typhoon Wipha, which caused widespread travel delays and challenges for arriving delegations.

Looking at Chess-Results, 20 players participated in the Classical portion, 16 in the Rapid, and 19 in the Blitz. A special congratulations goes to Shen Ree Herng for securing 3rd place in the Under-16 Open category and earning the Candidate Master (CM) title — a reflection of the bright future ahead for this rising star!
