In a recent report released by FIDE – report was led by David Smerdon and The University of Queensland Australia, Malaysia has been ranked 7th in FIDE Gender Equality in Chess Index with Mongolia at the top of the ranking followed by Sri Lanka and Uganda. Regionally, Malaysia is ranked second in ASEAN behind Vietnam which is also ranked 4th globally.

In Participation Index of the same report, Malaysia was also ranked 7th overall globally and finished slightly higher than Vietnam in the Regional race at the top spot, with Vietnam a tad behind in the 8th spot and 2nd in ASEAN.

In Performance Index, Malaysia is 37th overall whilst Vietnam is Ranked 2nd globally (1st in ASEAN) and Indonesia ranked 9th in the world (2nd in ASEAN). Singapore is ranked 17th in the world and 3rd in ASEAN.

The report only cited 6 ASEAN countries – Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore, Philippines and Thailand with Brunei, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar unlisted in the report that were marked for 105 countries worldwide.
