Additional Note: WFM Agnes Chong Kai Ni on Board 2, won Malaysia’s Bronze Medal as 3rd Best Board 2 player – scoring 8 points out of 9 games. Congrats WFM Agnes!!
The Malaysian A Team – dubbed the Malaysian Avengers, shined at the U14 events to finish in 3rd spot after raking in 12 match points to edge Mongolia Team 1 – with the same match point, by half a game point. India A came in first with 15 match points followed by Iran A with 14 points. India B came in 3rd on paper – with 13 points but due to event regulations, Malaysia with 12 points were promoted as the 2nd runner up with 12 points. Malaysia also secured a Gold medal for Best Board 2 player in Poh Yu Tian who scored 8 points out of 9 games. Malaysia Avengers comprised of Team Captain Teh Rui Gen on Board 1, Gold Medal 2nd Board winner Poh Yu Tian on Board 2, Kavin Mohan on Board 3 and Lai Hong Jun on the anchor board.
Malaysia Boys Team B – Malaysia Challengers, was in 8th place with 11 match points earning 21 game points. Two other teams with similar scores with Malaysia are Iran Team B and Philippines. Three other teams in the same match scoring bracket but differ in game points are Mongolia Team B, Kazakhstan Team 1 and Kazakhstan.
For the Girls, the Malaysia A Team – the Avengers, ended up in 11th spot with 9 match points whilst the Malaysia Team B – the Challengers, were in 16th spot with 8 match points.
A total of 32 teams participated in the Boys event and 24 teams in the Girls event.
The Malaysian Chess Federation CONGRATULATES the Malaysian U14 Boys Team – The Malaysian Avengers, on their impressive performance, and at the same time, thanked all the Malaysian players who have taken part in the event for their dedication, effort and true sportsmanship throughout the event. The Malaysian Chess Federation is confident that the experiences and knowledge gained during the event will provide a better platform for the all the players involved, to further improve and develop their playing skills and level of play to strive better in future competitions – be it at the International level, local level or personal level.
