The Malaysian Ladies Team started their ASIAN Nations Online Cup campaign on a losing note but bounced back to score two consecutive wins in Round 2 and Round 3 to finish the first day of play at the 10th spot.

It was a one sided match in favor of the 6th seed Iranian Ladies Team in Malaysia’s opening match, losing 0-4 to the much higher rated middle east team that has a FIDE Rating average of 2097 against our average of 1461.

However, our Girls did not despair and in Round 2, avenged their first round loss by demolishing Pakistan Team with the same score line of 4-0. In Round 3, our girls were again pitted against the slightly higher seeded team of Iraq – ranked 14th, and again the girls were triumphant beating the Iraqi’s 3.5-0.5 with WCM Ding Dao En being the only Malaysian to draw her game against the much higher rated opponent WFM A-Ali Sali Abbas Abdulzahra.

Malaysia is now in 10th place with 4 match points – sharing the same match points with 8 other nations. In 9th place is Kyrgyzstan and in 11th place is our Southern neighbor Singapore. Four countries are sharing 6 match points each led by Kazakhstan at the top spot, followed by Vietnam, Iran and Indonesia. Top seeded India is currently 8th after a surprise lost against Iran by a margin of 1.5-2.5 in the 3rd round. Missing from the event is one of Asia’s chess powerhouse China who also skipped the Men’s event.

The Women will now take a 6 days break and Round 4 will resume on Saturday 17th October 2020 at 2:00pm local Malaysian Time. All the best to our Ladies Team – WE CAN DO IT!
