Finally, the final and formal approval came from Commissioner of Sports Office earlier today informing us that we can proceed with the Hybrid event. The approval is part of the National Security Council and Ministry of Youth and Sports regulation for those who want to organize events while CMCO/MCO/RMCO are being enforced. The approval comes as a relief since MCF still owes FIDE one final event to complete the three(3) hybrid online activities which are funded by FIDE. Once this event is completed, it will allow MCF to close the chapter, and proceed with new fund request for 2021. Further, this would be the first Classical FIDE Rated event organized after more than 1 year hiatus due to the COVID19 pandemic – the last one being the Penang Open held in December 2019

The MCF KUPTM National Hybrid Online Individual Open and Challenger Chess Championship 2021 is jointly organized by MCF and KUPTM (Kolej University Poly-Tech MARA) located in Taman Shamelin Perkasa, Kuala Lumpur. KUPTM was kind enough to provide a huge space to accommodate up to 50 players taking into account that there are plenty of chess players residing within the Klang Valley. As a huge and prominent organization, rest assured that players who log in at the center will definitely received good internet connection speed and excellent support from KUPTM expert Technical Team in charge of the venue.

Briefly, the MCF KUPTM National Hybrid offers a Classical Time Control of 110 minutes + 10 seconds increment over 9 rounds of play covering 5 days. The Hybrid format will be FIDE Rated – the first for Malaysia and is broken into two(2) main categories – Open and Below 1800. Unrated players are not allowed in the Open event, but those with FIDE Rating 1800 or lower are allowed to enter the Open Category but will need to pay a higher entry fees.

A total prize fund of RM 8,000 has been set aside for the eventual winners with RM 1,600 allocated for the Open Champion. For the OPEN Category, the fees are FREE for NM/WNM/IM/WIM and RM60 to other titled players. Normal entries are charged RM 100 and those with 1800 or lower are charged RM130 while PARA players are charged RM 70. Category prizes are also offered but requiring minimum three (3) players in each category for the prizes to be available.

For the Challenger Category, fees are set at RM 70 for players with Rating and RM 90 for UnRated, and PARA players are charged RM 40. Similarly, category prizes are also offered provided there are more than 3 players vying for each of the sub-category.
