NIRISH KUMAR BAGGED THE RAPID EVENT WITH KAVIN MOHAN SECURING THE BLITZ
It was perhaps one of the more sought after MCF event with 174 players in the Rapid event and another 193 players for the Blitz event. With many organizers gradually returning to normal Over-The-Board events post COVID19 – including MCF in its effort to refocus its activities, overlooked to organize the 2022 edition.
The event was penned much earlier and was scheduled to be held on the last week of November but due to venue unavailability, had to be brought forward with a shorter promotional period. Nonetheless, the organizing team headed by MCF Chief Information Officer – Iwan Schani Ibnu, managed to get things up and running in a short period of time with a better than expected turnout from many chess enthusiasts from around the country.
For the Rapid event, 15 year old Nirish Kumar Siva Kumar did well to hold the field and maintain his composure to notch an almost perfect score of 8 points from 9 rounds to edge top seed FM Lim Zhuo Ren half point behind together with CM Dr Zaidan Zulkipli and Penangite Loo Pin Xie in 2nd, 3rd and 4th place respectively. It seems that all the effort of taking part in a grueling international schedule earlier this year has paid off for the youngster in earning more experience and knowledge to improve his playing prowess. WCM Chua Jia Tien took the Best Women player with 6.5 points at 13th placing overall.
For the 11 round Blitz championship, 11 year old Kavin Mohan was the outright winner with 9.5 points to secure the top spot. FM Lim Zhuo Ren had to again be contented at his runner up position with 9 points, with Uzair Shahar completing the podium spot with the same score line.
The winner was decided right down to the last round with Kavin paired to face Zhuo Ren to determine the winner. Although Zhuo Ren needed just a draw to secure the win, Kavin has other ideas in mind and took the reigning National Champion to the task. FM Wong Yinn Long was in 4th place, followed by CM Lai Hong Jun, Tan Yi Xun and Hiew Jing Yung – all with 8.5 points each. After an all out effort at the Rapid, Nirish Kumar had to be contented a the 10th spot with 8 points.
