A total of 38 players will be vying for the MCC 24 Open Champion with another 24 ladies for the MCC 2024 Women Champion. And for the Challenger category – in its 3rd edition since it was first introduced in 2022, 69 players will be challenging as the best Amateur player in the country.

While the number of participants in the ladies event has increased significantly compare to only 14 players last year, the number of the Open category took quite a dip with only 38 players playing against last year’s number of 54 players. For the challenger category, there were 84 players taking part in the same event last year and the number took a slight dip to 69 for this year’s edition. However, there is a last minute effort to add more local players to play in the challenger section as such, the numbers may increase within the next few days before the start of the event.

As mentioned in the event prospectus, apart from the higher prize fund given to the winners of this year’s edition, MCF will also select the top 3 players from both the Open and Women event as our national representative to the World Olympiad in Budapest come September 2024. The balance two players will be selected by the Selection Committee and will be announced once the MCC event concludes as MCF will need to initiate the necessary preparation to organize the National Team to the biannual chess fiesta.
